Scientists at Lipotec, a Spanish cosmetics research company, had an idea. Botox worked by interfering with a protein complex called SNARE, which helps nerve cells release the chemicals that trigger muscle movement. What if a small peptide could do the same thing, but gently enough to apply in a cream?

The team created Argireline, a six-amino-acid peptide that mimicked part of the SNARE complex. Applied topically, it reduced wrinkle depth by relaxing facial muscles — not completely, but enough to smooth expression lines.

Argireline was a hit. But the scientists weren't done. By adding two more amino acids, they created SNAP-8 — a more potent, more stable version that penetrated skin better and lasted longer. The improvement wasn't huge, but in the world of anti-aging, every percentage point matters.
